Mo Jen began scoring films in 1994 when her band, Strangefruit, was asked to create original music for a dark independent film called The Second Room. In one of the recording sessions for the film she improvised an unusual solo acoustic piano cue to accompany a disturbing scene. The piano cue made it into the final cut of the film, unedited. After that, she was hooked.
